How is sneezing treated?

Sneezing is a reflex that clears irritants from the nose. Dust, pollen, animal dander, strong smells and dry air can trigger it. Repeated sneezing with an itchy or watery nose may occur with Allergic Rhinitis, while a blocked nose, cough or feeling unwell can accompany a Common Cold. House Dust Mite Allergy and Pet Allergy are possible trigger patterns rather than conclusions from sneezing alone.

Notice when sneezing starts and reduce exposure to the suspected trigger. Keep rooms ventilated, avoid smoke and use gentle saline nasal rinsing if it suits you. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether Allergy Medication, such as an antihistamine or a nasal treatment, is appropriate. Follow the label and ask before using a product if you are pregnant, have another medical condition or take regular medicines.

Arrange medical advice if sneezing persists, disrupts sleep, repeatedly returns without a clear trigger or comes with wheezing, facial pain, fever or thick nasal discharge. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction.
