How Is Scabies Treated?

Scabies is caused by mites that spread mainly through prolonged close skin contact. Intense itchy skin and itching worse at night are common presentations, often with a small or widespread skin rash. Itching can continue after the mites have been cleared, so ongoing symptoms do not always mean treatment has failed.

A clinician may recommend scabies treatment applied over specified areas of skin, with careful attention to hands, folds, and under nails when instructed. Some people need a different or additional medicine. Treat household members and other close contacts as advised, wash or heat-treat recently used bedding and clothes, and seal items that cannot be washed. Avoid close skin contact until the treatment plan says it is safe.

Arrange a GP consultation when nighttime itching and a new rash affect you or several close contacts, especially for an infant, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with reduced immunity. Seek review if new burrows or spots appear after treatment, the skin becomes infected, or thick crusts develop.
