How Is Nail Psoriasis Treated?

Nail psoriasis can cause pits, grooves, colour changes, thickening, crumbling, or lifting from the nail bed. It may affect fingernails, toenails, or both, and can resemble a fungal infection. A dermatologist may examine the nail and test material if infection is also possible. Skin or joint symptoms can help shape the overall assessment.

Treatment depends on the number of nails involved, the severity of inflammation, and whether psoriasis affects the skin or joints. A prescribed medicine applied around or under the nail may be suitable for limited disease. A steroid injection into the skin near the nail can be considered for selected nails. Biologic therapy or another systemic plan may help when nail disease is persistent or part of wider psoriasis. Keep nails short, wear protective gloves for wet work, and avoid biting or picking.

Arrange review for a painful, lifting, draining, or rapidly changing nail, especially if the surrounding skin is red or swollen. New finger or toe joint pain, morning stiffness, or swelling deserves prompt discussion because nail psoriasis can occur alongside psoriatic arthritis. Do not assume every colour change is psoriasis without assessment.
