Short answer

Muscle cramps are treated by gently stretching the affected muscle, using warmth, replacing fluids when needed, and treating the underlying cause.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Repeated or severe cramps deserve assessment.

What treatment depends on

A cramp is a sudden, involuntary tightening of a muscle. It may follow exercise, prolonged sitting, sweating, dehydration, pregnancy, or a medicine effect. Recurrent cramps can also be associated with thyroid problems, reduced circulation, muscle injury, or low vitamin D, so the pattern and your general health matter. A clinician may review medicines, examine the legs and feet, and arrange blood tests when symptoms keep returning.

What you can do

Stop the activity and slowly lengthen the cramped muscle. For a calf cramp, straighten the leg and draw the toes towards you, or stand and place weight gently on the leg if safe. Massage and a warm shower can help the muscle relax; cooling may soothe soreness afterwards. Drink fluids, particularly after sweating or vomiting; an oral rehydration solution may be useful when fluid and salts have been lost. Regular calf and hamstring stretches, supportive footwear, and gradual changes in exercise may reduce repeats. Do not start mineral supplements or muscle-relaxant medicine without advice.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if cramps are frequent, severe, last unusually long, disturb sleep repeatedly, or begin after a new medicine. Seek urgent help for a painful swollen leg, a cold or pale foot, marked weakness, loss of feeling, or cramps with chest pain or breathing difficulty. Assessment is also sensible when cramps occur with persistent thirst, diarrhoea, or vomiting.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your medicines, hydration, circulation, thyroid function, or vitamin levels could be contributing. You can also ask which stretches suit your activity and whether a treatment such as muscle relaxant medication is appropriate.
