How is muscle contusion treated?

Short answer

A muscle contusion is treated with protection, cold therapy, gentle movement and gradual strengthening, while serious swelling or loss of function needs assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Early protection
Avoid repeat impact and forceful stretching
Progression
Motion first, then strength and sport-specific loading

What happens after a muscle bruise

A contusion occurs when a direct blow damages muscle fibres and small blood vessels beneath the skin. Bruising, tenderness, swelling and reduced movement can occur in the thigh or calf. The depth of the injury matters: a deeper collection of blood can restrict motion and may need examination, especially when pain is increasing rather than easing.

Care during recovery

Protect the area from another impact and pause sprinting, jumping or heavy loading at first. Apply a wrapped cold pack for short periods and elevate the limb if it is swollen. Avoid forceful massage or aggressive stretching early on. As pain settles, gentle range-of-motion work can progress to light strengthening under guidance. Physiotherapy can plan a safe return to sport; Hot and Cold Therapy and Sports Massage may be considered at suitable stages, not over a fresh or highly swollen bruise.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review if swelling becomes tense, movement is markedly restricted, pain is severe, numbness develops or walking is difficult. Seek urgent care after a high-force injury, with a rapidly enlarging thigh or calf, pale or cold skin, significant weakness, or pain that seems out of proportion.

Questions for your doctor

Is this a straightforward bruise or could there be a deeper injury? When can I stretch, strengthen or return to sport? Should I avoid massage or certain medicines while swelling is present?
