How is hand numbness treated?

Numbness can begin at the wrist, elbow, neck or upper chest, and the finger pattern helps a clinician locate the nerve involved. The assessment may include grip, sensation, neck and arm movement, and checks for weakness. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects the median nerve at the wrist; Cubital Tunnel Syndrome affects the ulnar nerve near the elbow. Cervical Radiculopathy and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome can produce symptoms farther along the arm.

Until assessed, avoid prolonged pressure on the wrist or elbow and change positions during activities that bring on tingling. A wrist support at night may be suitable for some people, but it should not be tight enough to increase symptoms.

Treatment may include ergonomic changes, activity modification, a splint, nerve-gliding or strength work guided by a clinician, and medicines when appropriate for the cause. If symptoms persist, testing may help confirm nerve compression and distinguish it from a neck problem. Carpal Tunnel Release may be considered when wrist compression remains troublesome or weakness develops; the operation is not the right treatment for every source of numbness.

Book an assessment when numbness keeps returning, wakes you, affects fine tasks, or comes with dropping objects or reduced grip. Seek emergency care for sudden numbness with facial drooping, speech trouble, severe weakness, chest discomfort or breathing difficulty. Urgent review is also needed for rapidly worsening weakness, a cold discoloured hand or severe neck pain after injury.

Ask which nerve pattern your symptoms follow, whether the neck or arm also needs examination, what position changes may help, whether testing is needed, and which weakness or sensation changes should trigger urgent review.
