How is drug rash treated?

A medication reaction may cause a widespread red or itchy eruption, hives, sun sensitivity, or changes limited to one area. The timing of each dose, recent medicines, supplements, infections, and previous reactions helps identify the likely trigger. A clinician also checks the mouth, eyes, genitals, palms, and soles because involvement of these sites can signal a more serious reaction.

Not every rash after a medicine is a drug eruption, and a medicine should not be labelled as an allergy without a careful review. The suspected drug may be stopped, changed, or continued only under the direction of the prescriber, depending on why it is needed and how severe the reaction appears.

Contact the prescriber or pharmacist promptly with the complete medicine list, including non-prescription products. For a mild reaction, treatment may include an oral antihistamine for itch or a prescribed topical corticosteroid for inflammation. Cool compresses, gentle fragrance-free products, and avoiding extra sun exposure can reduce discomfort. Do not restart a suspected medicine or share leftover treatment unless a clinician gives clear instructions.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, blistering, skin pain, peeling, sores in the mouth or eyes, or a rash with fever. These features can occur with severe reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and need urgent assessment rather than home treatment.

Ask which medicine is suspected, whether it should be stopped immediately, what alternatives are available, and whether the reaction should be recorded as an allergy. Ask what symptoms require emergency help and whether you need follow-up after the rash settles.
