How is cold hands and feet treated?

Hands and feet can feel cold after exposure to cool air or when the body narrows small blood vessels. Persistent symptoms may also occur with anaemia, hypothyroidism or iron deficiency anaemia. Reduced blood flow from peripheral arterial disease is another possibility, particularly when one limb is colder or walking causes leg discomfort.

A clinician will ask when the symptom started, whether both sides are affected, and whether there are colour changes, numbness, pain, tiredness or breathlessness. Examination and blood tests can help identify the treatment that fits the cause.

Use warm socks and gloves, keep your core comfortably warm and move regularly to encourage circulation. Avoid placing numb skin directly against very hot water or a heater. Do not take iron supplements simply for cold hands and feet; iron supplementation is appropriate when a clinician confirms a need and advises the dose.

Book an appointment if coldness is persistent, worsening, one-sided or accompanied by numbness, colour change, sores, pain or reduced walking tolerance. Seek urgent help if a hand or foot suddenly becomes very cold, pale or blue, severely painful, weak or difficult to move.
