How Is Bleeding After Sex Treated?

A small tear or irritation may improve when the affected tissue has time to heal, with advice about gentler sex and avoiding products that irritate the area. Vaginal dryness linked with genitourinary syndrome of menopause may be managed with lubricants, moisturisers, or prescribed local treatment.

Infections such as chlamydia need specific prescription treatment, and sexual partners may also need assessment. Cervical ectropion or cervical polyps can sometimes be treated with a procedure if they keep causing bleeding. Abnormal cervical cells may require closer monitoring or treatment such as a cone biopsy; this does not mean that every episode of bleeding is cervical cancer. A cervical examination helps distinguish these possibilities.

Arrange an appointment with a doctor or sexual health clinician if bleeding happens repeatedly, follows sex after menopause, or has no clear explanation. The assessment may include questions about timing, contraception, pregnancy possibility, pain, discharge, and your cervical screening history, followed by an examination and tests when needed.

Until you are assessed, note when the bleeding occurs, how long it lasts, and whether it follows penetration or appears with pain or discharge. Use a pad if useful for monitoring. Avoid sex that causes bleeding or pain, and do not use vaginal douches.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or continuing bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy. These features can need prompt assessment, especially when pain and bleeding occur together.

Bleeding after sex can have causes that need treatment, including cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer. A symptom does not diagnose either condition, but unexplained or recurring bleeding should be checked rather than self-treated.

Ask what might be causing the bleeding, whether you need an examination or infection testing, and whether your cervical screening is up to date. You can also ask which treatments are appropriate for the finding, whether sex should be avoided while tissue heals, and what changes should prompt a follow-up visit.
