How is basal cell carcinoma treated?

A dermatologist confirms the diagnosis, often with a skin biopsy, then considers the tumour's borders, depth, position and whether it has returned. A diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma does not mean every skin lump is cancer.

Surgical removal is commonly used, with the wound closed or allowed to heal according to its site and size. Mohs-style staged surgery may be considered where checking clear edges while preserving nearby tissue matters. Arrange a prompt skin assessment for a sore that repeatedly bleeds, crusts, enlarges or fails to heal, including a [Sore That Will Not Heal](/symptoms/non-healing-sore/) or [Skin Ulcer](/symptoms/skin-ulcer/). After treatment, contact the treating team for increasing redness, warmth, pus, uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain or a new change at the treated site.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, why a particular treatment fits the site and tumour type, how the wound will be cared for, and what follow-up schedule will check for recurrence or new lesions.
