How is Baker's cyst treated?

A Baker's cyst is a fluid-filled swelling behind the knee. It often forms when irritation inside the joint produces extra fluid, such as with knee osteoarthritis or a meniscus tear. Treatment therefore considers both the cyst and the reason the knee is inflamed. Some cysts settle as the underlying irritation improves; others remain uncomfortable or limit bending.

A clinician may recommend temporarily reducing activities that increase pressure or repeated bending, then gradually restoring movement. Ice wrapped in a cloth, elevation and a suitable pain-relief plan may help symptoms. Physiotherapy can work on knee mobility, leg strength and movement habits. If the knee contains substantial fluid, joint aspiration may be considered; the fluid can return if the underlying problem is untreated. Do not try to puncture the swelling yourself.

Arrange assessment for a new lump behind the knee, persistent knee pain or swelling, or difficulty walking or bending the joint. Seek urgent care if the calf suddenly becomes painful and swollen, the skin becomes hot or red, or you develop chest pain or breathlessness, because a ruptured cyst can resemble other conditions that need prompt evaluation.

Ask what is driving the knee fluid, whether imaging is needed, which activities are safe, and whether aspiration or physiotherapy fits your symptoms. Ask how recurrence will be addressed if the knee problem continues.
