How is anaphylaxis treated?

Short answer

Anaphylaxis is treated as an emergency with adrenaline, emergency medical care, airway support when needed, and observation for returning symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What emergency treatment involves

Anaphylaxis is a rapid, severe allergic reaction that can affect breathing, blood pressure, skin, and digestion. If an adrenaline auto-injector is available, it should be used promptly according to its instructions, then emergency services should be contacted. Medical teams may give further adrenaline, oxygen, fluids, or medicines for specific symptoms. Antihistamines do not replace adrenaline when breathing or circulation is affected. People are monitored because symptoms can return after they first improve.

What to do during a reaction

Call emergency services immediately for facial swelling, difficulty swallowing, wheezing, breathing difficulty, collapse, or symptoms affecting more than one body system after a possible allergen. Use the prescribed auto-injector into the outer thigh if indicated. Lie down with legs raised unless breathing is easier sitting up; avoid standing or walking. A second dose may be needed if symptoms persist and the device instructions or emergency professionals advise it. Arrange follow-up for identifying triggers and an emergency action plan.

When to seek care

Every suspected anaphylactic reaction needs emergency assessment, even if the person improves after adrenaline. Do not drive yourself. Urgent help is especially important when the trigger may be a food, medicine, or insect sting and symptoms are progressing quickly. Later review may include allergy testing and advice on carrying prescribed emergency medicine.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what triggered the reaction, how to use the auto-injector, whether you need more than one device, which allergens to avoid, and when allergy testing is appropriate. Ask for a written emergency plan and advice for family, school, or workplace contacts.

Questions people ask

Can antihistamines treat anaphylaxis?

They may help some skin symptoms, but they do not replace adrenaline or emergency care when anaphylaxis is suspected.

Should I go to hospital after using adrenaline?

Yes. Symptoms can return, so emergency assessment and observation are needed even when the reaction appears better.
