How is food handler medical different in food handlers?

The appointment is not a general check-up alone. The clinician asks about your work, contact with unpackaged food, recent illness, bowel symptoms, skin problems, respiratory symptoms, and relevant medical history. Depending on workplace and local health requirements, the process may include an examination, laboratory samples, vaccination review, or paperwork for a health card. The purpose is to identify a current problem that could contaminate food or make food handling unsafe, and to guide temporary restrictions when needed. A normal assessment does not mean you can ignore symptoms later.

Take identification, employer or occupational-health instructions, previous medical documents, and a list of medicines. Describe your exact duties, including cooking, serving, cleaning, delivery, and handling ready-to-eat food. Tell the clinician about vomiting, diarrhoea, jaundice, fever, infected wounds, or skin lesions, even if symptoms have improved. Follow instructions for any requested sample and ask when results or documentation will be available. Do not work with exposed food while acutely unwell; notify your supervisor and follow the workplace’s return-to-work process.

Seek medical advice promptly for repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, blood in stool, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dehydration, high fever, or an infected wound on the hand. Urgent care is needed for confusion, fainting, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact occupational health after a new diagnosis that may affect food handling, a household exposure that worries you, or a change in symptoms while awaiting clearance. Keep cuts covered only as advised; a dressing does not replace reporting an infection.

Ask which examinations or samples are required for your role, whether you should stay away from food handling while symptoms settle, and what documentation your employer needs. Ask when you may return, how to protect a wound, and which symptoms should trigger a repeat assessment.
