How is flu vaccination different in older adults?

Ageing can change how strongly the immune system responds to vaccination. A clinician may therefore discuss a vaccine made for older age groups or another formulation selected for the season and local programme. The aim is to improve protection against influenza, which can be more disruptive in later life and may aggravate existing heart, lung, kidney, or metabolic problems. The injection does not cause influenza. Soreness at the injection site, tiredness, or a mild temperature can occur for a short time. The vaccine is updated and offered seasonally because circulating influenza viruses change.

Book vaccination when it becomes available through your clinic or local health service, and tell the vaccinator about previous vaccine reactions, current illness, allergies, and medicines that affect immunity or bleeding. Bring a list of regular medicines and mention conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease. If you have a fever or feel acutely unwell, ask whether to postpone the appointment. Continue ordinary infection precautions because vaccination targets influenza and does not prevent every respiratory infection. After the injection, remain at the clinic for the observation period they recommend.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or widespread hives after vaccination. Contact a clinician if a reaction is worsening, lasts longer than expected, or you develop a new high fever or severe weakness. During flu season, prompt advice is sensible if you develop breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, dehydration, or a sudden decline in an existing condition. Older adults may have influenza without a dramatic fever, so new weakness or reduced alertness also deserves attention.
