Finasteride changes conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, a hormone involved in follicle miniaturisation in some patterned hair loss. Its use in women is more selective and depends on age, reproductive status, diagnosis, and other health factors. It is not suitable during pregnancy because exposure can affect development of a male fetus. A clinician may discuss menstrual, breast, mood, sexual, or other possible effects and review medicines that could interact with the plan. Benefits, if seen, develop gradually and require continued treatment.

Confirm the cause of hair loss before starting treatment; sudden shedding, patchy loss, or scalp disease may need another approach. Tell the prescriber if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, breastfeeding, or could become pregnant. Discuss reliable pregnancy prevention and what to do if pregnancy occurs.
