How effective is wound care and dressing for animal bite?

An animal bite can push bacteria beneath the skin and may damage tendons, joints, nerves or blood vessels. Care begins with careful rinsing and removal of visible contamination. A suitable dressing limits rubbing and contact with dirt while the wound is reviewed. The dressing itself cannot determine whether tissue damage is deeper, and a small-looking puncture can hide a deeper track. A clinician may also assess tetanus protection and whether rabies prevention needs consideration based on the animal, exposure and local circumstances.

Wash your hands, then rinse the wound thoroughly with clean running water. Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze if it is bleeding, without scrubbing deeply or sealing a puncture tightly. Cover it with a clean, non-stick dressing and change the dressing when wet, dirty or loose. Avoid putting irritant chemicals, soil or home remedies into the wound. Record when the bite happened and what animal was involved; seek prompt clinical advice even if the skin opening seems small.

Arrange urgent assessment for a bite to the hand, face, foot, genitals or near a joint, a deep puncture, uncontrolled bleeding, numbness, reduced movement or severe pain. Seek immediate help for rapidly spreading redness, increasing warmth, swelling, pus, fever, red streaks or feeling faint. Contact a clinician promptly if the animal is unfamiliar, unavailable for observation, behaving unusually or vaccination status is uncertain.

Ask whether the wound needs exploration, closure, antibiotics or a tetanus booster. Ask what signs of infection to watch for, how often to change the dressing and whether rabies advice is needed for this exposure.
