How effective is wet wrap therapy for atopic dermatitis?

A moisturiser, and sometimes a prescribed topical medicine, is applied before a damp layer of clothing or bandage is placed over the affected skin. A dry layer goes on top. This reduces water loss, softens scale, and creates a physical barrier against rubbing and scratching. It is generally used for a limited period during a flare rather than as a routine substitute for an eczema plan. Response varies with the severity of inflammation, skin infection, and the product used underneath.

Ask a clinician to demonstrate the layers and confirm which products belong under the wrap. Use clean materials, avoid wrapping tightly, and check the skin regularly for stinging, worsening redness, swelling, or increasing discomfort. Do not place a wet wrap over infected-looking skin unless a clinician has advised it. Keep the person warm and hydrated, and stop if the skin reacts badly. A written plan can help you know when to remove the wrap and what maintenance care follows.

Contact a clinician promptly if eczema becomes painful, rapidly more swollen, crusted, oozing, or associated with fever. Small clustered blisters, marked tenderness, or sudden worsening also need urgent assessment. Seek advice if wet wraps repeatedly irritate the skin or the flare is not settling with the agreed plan.
