How effective is upper endoscopy for helicobacter pylori infection?

A thin flexible camera passes through the mouth to view the oesophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine. During the examination, the clinician may take small stomach samples for H. pylori testing. This makes endoscopy useful when symptoms or examination findings also require a direct look, but testing alone may be possible without a procedure in other situations.

Follow fasting and medicine instructions, and arrange transport if sedation is planned. Tell the endoscopy team about blood thinners, allergies, pregnancy, and previous reactions to sedation. Ask how biopsy results will be reported. If H. pylori is found, treatment usually involves prescribed medicines, followed by a test chosen to confirm whether the infection has cleared.

Arrange assessment for persistent upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unexplained anaemia, difficulty swallowing, or ongoing indigestion. Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe chest or abdominal pain, fainting, or breathing trouble after the procedure.
