How effective is upper endoscopy for Barrett's oesophagus?

During an upper endoscopy, a flexible camera passes through the mouth to inspect the oesophagus and upper digestive tract. The clinician can look for the area of Barrett's tissue, irritation, narrowing, ulcers or a visible growth. Small tissue samples, called biopsies, can be collected during the same procedure.

The camera view alone cannot reliably show every microscopic cell change. A pathologist examines biopsies for dysplasia or cancer. The findings help the team decide whether routine surveillance, repeat sampling, endoscopic treatment or another assessment is appropriate.

Follow the fasting instructions and tell the endoscopy team about medicines, allergies, diabetes, breathing problems and previous reactions to sedation. Arrange an escort if sedation is planned, because alertness and coordination may be reduced afterward.

Keep the appointment where biopsy results are explained. Ask how the result changes your surveillance schedule and whether reflux symptoms need separate treatment. Endoscopy is a tool for assessment and monitoring; it does not by itself remove Barrett's tissue throughout the oesophagus.

After the procedure, seek urgent medical advice for severe or worsening chest or abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fever, breathing difficulty or trouble swallowing that is getting worse. Mild throat soreness can occur, but persistent or escalating symptoms need review.
