How effective is tumour removal surgery for thymoma?

The operation usually removes the thymoma and the thymus, with nearby tissue considered when the tumour has extended beyond it. Imaging helps the team judge whether the mass can be removed safely and whether it is close to the heart, lungs, or major blood vessels.

A complete removal may not be possible when the tumour has grown into important structures or spread through the chest. In that situation, medicines or radiotherapy may be used before or after surgery, or the operation may focus on relieving pressure and reducing tumour tissue. Follow-up checks look for recurrence and monitor recovery.

Ask whether the tumour appears contained, what structures may be involved, and whether the goal is complete removal or control. Discuss breathing assessment, the possible need for intensive monitoring, and when additional treatment would be considered.

Tell the team about chest symptoms, muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, swallowing difficulty, and medicines. If you have myasthenia gravis or another immune-related condition, make sure the surgical and anaesthetic teams know before the operation.

Seek urgent care for new severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, rapidly worsening weakness, or trouble swallowing. After surgery, follow the discharge instructions and report fever, worsening wound redness, sudden breathing change, or increasing weakness promptly.
