How effective is tumour removal surgery for spinal cord compression?

The operation aims to remove enough tumour or affected tissue to take pressure off the spinal cord and make the spine more stable. Some people notice improved strength, walking, sensation, or control of bladder and bowel function. Surgery may also prevent further deterioration. Recovery is less predictable when nerve damage has been severe or symptoms have been present for a longer time.

The surgical plan may be combined with radiotherapy, medicines, or stabilisation using implants. The tumour type, its position, spread, response to other treatment, and your general health all shape the expected benefit. Removing every visible tumour is not always possible or necessary.

Contact the treating team urgently if you have new back pain with weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, or changes in bladder or bowel control. Ask whether the spinal cord is compressed, which tests are needed, and how quickly treatment should start.

Before surgery, discuss the goal of the operation, whether spinal stabilisation is needed, expected hospital care, and rehabilitation. Tell the team about medicines, blood thinners, and any change in your strength or sensation.

Sudden or worsening weakness, inability to walk, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the inner thighs or buttocks needs emergency assessment. These changes can signal increasing pressure on the spinal cord. Do not wait for a routine appointment if they appear.
