How effective is tumour removal surgery for soft tissue sarcoma?

Soft tissue sarcomas can arise in muscle, fat, connective tissue or other areas, so the operation varies by site. The surgeon aims to remove the tumour and a rim of surrounding tissue while preserving useful movement, sensation and blood supply. A tumour close to a major nerve or vessel may require reconstruction or a wider procedure. Imaging maps local and distant disease, and pathology confirms the sarcoma type, grade and margin status. Radiotherapy or drug treatment may be recommended before or after surgery when it could improve local control or address disease beyond the operation.

Ask whether the sarcoma should be managed at a specialist sarcoma centre and which structures are near it. Discuss whether preoperative treatment could change the operation, the chance of reconstruction, expected movement limits and physiotherapy. Ask how the pathology report will affect follow-up and whether scans of the chest or other areas are needed. Plan wound support, transport and help with daily activities while mobility is restricted.

After surgery, report fever, worsening redness, pus, wound separation, sudden limb swelling, new weakness or numbness, severe pain or a cold or pale extremity. Chest pain, sudden breathlessness or coughing blood needs emergency help. A rapidly enlarging lump or new persistent pain during follow-up also deserves prompt assessment, especially if it is near the treated area.

What sarcoma subtype and grade do I have? Can the tumour be removed with clear margins? Which nerves, vessels or muscles are nearby? Would radiotherapy or drug treatment be useful? How will recurrence be monitored?
