How effective is tumour removal surgery for small bowel cancer?

Small bowel cancer includes different tumour types, and the operation is tailored to where the tumour sits and how far it has grown. The surgeon may remove a section of bowel with nearby lymph nodes, then join the healthy ends. If the tumour has involved nearby organs, a wider operation may be considered. When cancer has spread, surgery may still relieve blockage, bleeding or pain in selected situations, although another treatment plan may be needed for disease elsewhere. Pathology checks the removed tissue, margins and nodes.

Ask which bowel segment is involved, whether nearby organs or lymph nodes need removal, and whether a temporary stoma is possible. Discuss eating and drinking after surgery, bowel changes, wound care and safe activity. Ask how scans and pathology will determine whether drug treatment is recommended. Arrange help at home, and report concerns about hydration, nutrition or bowel function during recovery.

Contact the surgical team for fever, worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, persistent bleeding, increasing wound redness or drainage, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek emergency care for severe pain with collapse, breathing difficulty or heavy bleeding. If a stoma is present, urgent advice is needed for marked colour change, no output with cramps or rapid fluid loss.
