How effective is tumour removal surgery for penile cancer?

Small, surface-level tumours may be treated with a local procedure that preserves more of the penis. Deeper or larger disease may require a wider excision or partial penectomy; extensive disease can require removal of more tissue. The surgeon aims to remove all visible cancer while preserving urination and sexual function where safely possible. The pathology report checks the tumour edges and other features. If lymph nodes are enlarged or considered at risk, the team may discuss lymph-node surgery or imaging. Radiation or drug treatment may also be part of the plan.

Ask where the tumour lies, how deep it is and what procedure is being proposed. Discuss how the operation may change urination, erections, sensation, appearance and fertility. Confirm whether a catheter, wound care or reconstruction is expected, and ask when normal activities can resume. If lymph-node assessment is advised, ask what it involves and how it changes follow-up. Write down the pathology questions you want answered after the operation.

Call the surgical team promptly for heavy bleeding, inability to pass urine, fever, increasing redness, foul drainage, severe swelling or pain that is not controlled. Seek emergency help for fainting, chest pain or difficulty breathing. A wound that opens or a catheter that stops draining also needs prompt advice rather than waiting for the next review.
