How effective is tumour removal surgery for mouth cancer?

The surgeon aims to remove the visible tumour together with a rim of nearby tissue. A laboratory examination checks the specimen and margins. The report may show whether cancer cells reach an edge, whether lymph nodes contain cancer, and whether further treatment should be considered.

Mouth cancer can involve the tongue, gums, inner cheek, floor of the mouth or palate. The operation and recovery therefore vary.
