How effective is tumour removal surgery for gastrointestinal stromal tumour?

For a localised gastrointestinal stromal tumour, the surgical aim is to remove the visible tumour with a suitable rim of surrounding tissue while avoiding rupture. The surgeon considers whether the tumour is in the stomach, small bowel or another digestive organ, and whether nearby structures are involved. Laboratory examination of the removed tissue helps assess the tumour’s cell type, mitotic activity and edge of removal. These findings can show whether additional treatment, such as targeted medicine, should be considered.

If the tumour has spread, surgery may be used selectively to relieve symptoms, remove disease that remains treatable, or support another treatment. It may not address every tumour focus on its own. A multidisciplinary team weighs the likely control of the disease against effects on digestion, recovery and nutrition.

Ask for the planned operation, its purpose, and how the team will judge the result. Bring reports from scans, biopsy or endoscopy and a current list of medicines. Your team may discuss whether targeted treatment before or after surgery could make removal safer or reduce the chance of the tumour returning.
