How effective is tranexamic acid for heavy bleeding for uterine fibroids?

Fibroids can increase the amount or duration of menstrual bleeding, depending on their size and position. Tranexamic acid supports clot stability in the uterine lining, which can reduce blood loss during the heavy days of a period. Its effect is limited to the bleeding episode; it does not remove or dissolve the fibroid.

It will not usually address pressure, urinary frequency, constipation, or pelvic discomfort caused by the fibroid. If bleeding continues to affect work, sleep, or daily life, an assessment can consider the fibroid's location, your future pregnancy plans, pain, and signs of anaemia alongside treatment options.

Follow the prescribed timing and dose, and do not take it for longer or more often than advised. Before starting, tell your clinician about previous clots, kidney disease, clotting conditions, visual symptoms, pregnancy possibility, and medicines or hormonal contraception.

Keep a period diary: note flooding, clots, how often protection is changed, missed activities, and dizziness or tiredness. Ask whether a blood count and iron assessment are needed. New, irregular, or post-menopausal bleeding should not be assumed to be from fibroids without appropriate review.

Seek urgent help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, a painful swollen leg, sudden weakness, or new visual disturbance. Contact a clinician promptly if heavy bleeding causes faintness, severe weakness, racing heartbeat, or breathlessness, or if pelvic pain is sudden and intense. These symptoms need assessment rather than extra tablets.
