How effective is hydroquinone treatment for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation appears after acne, eczema, injury, burns, or another inflammatory process settles. Hydroquinone reduces pigment production in the marked area; it does not erase pigment instantly and does not stop a new mark forming if the skin remains inflamed.

Marks closer to the surface may fade more readily than grey-brown or deep blue-grey discoloration. Skin tone, the cause of inflammation, repeated rubbing, and light exposure all influence how noticeable the change becomes.

First control the active problem, such as acne or dermatitis, with a plan suited to your skin. Apply hydroquinone only to intact skin and only as directed. Gentle cleansing, moisturising, and avoiding picking or friction reduce the chance of adding new inflammation.

Use daily light protection on exposed areas, including shade and sunscreen. Keep a simple routine while assessing tolerance. If dryness, stinging, or peeling develops, contact the prescriber rather than applying more or layering another exfoliating product.

Seek care for painful, swollen, blistered, oozing, or rapidly spreading inflammation. Ask for assessment if the mark changes shape or colour unexpectedly, becomes blue-black, or remains unchanged after the agreed treatment period. Persistent new spots may mean the original trigger is still active.
