How effective are topical corticosteroids for stasis dermatitis?

Stasis dermatitis develops when fluid and blood pressure build up in the lower legs, often around areas affected by venous circulation problems. A corticosteroid cream or ointment may settle an active flare, soften irritation, and make the skin more comfortable. Its benefit is usually limited to the inflammatory component. Persistent swelling, dry scaling, skin thickening, or recurrent ulcers need a broader plan. Using a stronger product or applying it for longer does not necessarily improve the underlying circulation and can thin or weaken skin.

Use the prescribed product in the amount and pattern advised, and avoid applying it to broken or infected skin unless your clinician specifically directs you. Moisturiser supports the skin barrier, while leg elevation, movement, and compression may be considered when a clinician confirms they are appropriate for you. Do not start compression if you have not had relevant circulation concerns assessed. Keep the area clean, avoid scratching, and arrange review if the rash keeps returning after treatment.

Seek prompt medical care for rapidly increasing leg swelling, one-sided warmth or pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, a new open sore, or skin that turns unusually dark or pale. These changes can signal infection, a wound needing treatment, or a circulation problem that a steroid cannot address.

Ask which strength and formulation suits the affected skin, how long to use it, whether moisturiser should be applied alongside it, and whether swelling needs assessment. Ask before using it near an ulcer or if the skin is weeping.
