How effective are topical corticosteroids for scalp psoriasis?

Scalp psoriasis can extend beyond the hairline and form adherent scale. A liquid, foam, gel, or solution may spread through hair more easily than a thick ointment. The medicine reduces local inflammation; it does not remove the tendency for psoriasis to recur. Softening scale first may help treatment reach the skin, but forceful scraping can cause irritation.

Part the hair so the product reaches the scalp, then use the prescribed amount and leave-on instructions. Wash hands afterwards and avoid the eyes and face unless told otherwise. Do not pick scale or keep extending treatment because flakes remain. A clinician may add a scale-softening product or another psoriasis treatment when the response is incomplete.

Arrange assessment if there is sudden patchy hair loss, pus, marked tenderness, bleeding, or thick crusting. Seek review when the rash reaches the ears, eyelids, or face, or when scalp symptoms continue despite correct use, because infection or another scalp condition can resemble psoriasis.
