How effective are topical corticosteroids for psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an inflammatory condition that can form raised, scaly plaques. A topical corticosteroid suppresses local inflammation and may make plaques flatter and less uncomfortable. It controls activity rather than removing the underlying tendency for psoriasis to recur. Thick plaques, scalp involvement, and hard-to-treat sites may need a different formulation or combination plan.

Apply the medicine in the amount and pattern advised, keeping it away from the eyes unless specifically directed. Moisturiser can soften scale and support the skin barrier. Do not extend treatment indefinitely or stop a long course abruptly without advice. Tell your clinician if plaques remain active, return quickly, or involve nails, joints, or sensitive areas.

Seek urgent care for widespread redness with feeling unwell, pus-filled lesions, rapidly worsening pain, or a severe reaction after application. Arrange a review for new joint swelling or morning stiffness, since psoriasis can affect joints and needs timely assessment.
