How effective are topical corticosteroids for pityriasis alba?

Pityriasis alba often appears as lighter, softly scaly patches, especially on the face. The active irritation may settle before the lighter colour blends back with surrounding skin. A mild medicine may be considered when inflammation or itching is noticeable; stronger products are not automatically more suitable, particularly on facial skin.

Use the prescribed product only on the affected skin and for the advised course. Apply moisturiser regularly to reduce dryness, and use broad-spectrum sun protection because tanning can make pale areas look more obvious. Avoid rubbing, fragranced products, and sharing someone else’s steroid cream. If there is no clear improvement, the diagnosis may need checking or another approach may be needed.

Arrange a medical assessment if patches spread quickly, become painful, ooze, crust, or develop marked swelling. Seek review when the colour change persists without scale, affects the eyes or mouth, or does not fit the usual mild pattern, since other causes of pale skin can look similar.

Ask whether the patches show active inflammation, which strength is appropriate for the site, how long to use it, and what moisturiser or sun protection routine will support recovery.
