How effective is topical corticosteroids for lichen sclerosus?

Lichen sclerosus causes inflammation and fragile, itchy skin, often around the vulva and anus. A prescribed corticosteroid reduces that inflammation. It can improve soreness, itching, splitting, and irritation, and may help prevent further scarring or changes in the skin's shape.

Improvement may be gradual rather than immediate. Treatment often starts with a planned course and then changes to a maintenance schedule if symptoms or examination findings return. The medicine controls the condition; it does not remove the need for follow-up, because lichen sclerosus can persist even when the skin feels better.

Apply the prescribed amount to the affected external skin exactly as directed. A clinician can show you where the medicine belongs and how to use it during a flare and between flares. Avoid fragranced washes, bubble baths, and harsh rubbing, which can add irritation. Use a bland emollient or protective ointment if advised.

Attend follow-up appointments so the skin can be checked for healing, scarring, and new areas. Do not stop a long-term plan simply because itching has settled, and do not increase applications because symptoms are worrying you. If the medicine burns persistently or seems to worsen the area, contact the prescriber.

Arrange a review for a new lump, thickened patch, open sore, bleeding area, or persistent ulcer, particularly if it does not settle with the prescribed plan.
