How effective are topical corticosteroids for hand eczema?

Hand skin is exposed to frequent washing, sanitiser, detergents, friction and wet work, so inflammation may return if those triggers continue. A prescribed corticosteroid may settle a flare and make cracks, scaling or soreness easier to manage. Thick skin on the palms can sometimes need a different preparation from thinner skin on the backs of the hands. Improvement does not prove that every rash is eczema; infection, allergy and other inflammatory conditions can look similar. These medicines control inflammation rather than repairing every trigger or replacing moisturiser.

Use the product exactly as directed, applying a thin layer to active patches and washing your hands after application unless the hands are the treated area. Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, especially after washing, and use protective gloves for tasks involving water or cleaning products. Cotton liners can reduce sweating and friction under waterproof gloves. Do not extend the course, use a stronger product, or cover the hands tightly without clinical advice. A clinician may review the diagnosis if flares recur, cracks are deep, or treatment only helps briefly.

Arrange medical review if the hands become increasingly painful, warm, swollen or ooze, because these changes can indicate infection or another problem. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, fever, or facial swelling or breathing difficulty after a product. Persistent cracks, bleeding, sleep-disrupting itch, or difficulty working deserve assessment even when a steroid gives partial relief.

Ask which strength and formulation suit your palms, how long to use it during a flare, and what maintenance plan can reduce repeat flares. Ask whether patch testing, protective measures or an alternative diagnosis should be considered if the rash keeps returning.
