How effective are topical corticosteroids for granuloma annulare?

Granuloma annulare commonly forms rings of firm, skin-coloured or reddish bumps, often on the backs of the hands, feet or other areas. A corticosteroid may quiet inflammation near the surface, but the deeper structure of the ring can make a cream less effective than treatment delivered by a clinician. Some patches change gradually even without active treatment, while others persist or spread. A biopsy or examination may be needed when the appearance is unusual.

Apply the prescribed product only to the lesions and follow the planned schedule. Avoid covering the area tightly unless instructed, because occlusion can increase absorption and side effects. Moisturising can help nearby dryness, but it will not remove the ring itself. Arrange a review if the diagnosis has not been confirmed, if new areas appear, or if there is no meaningful change after the agreed trial. Other options may be considered for widespread or persistent disease.

Arrange medical review for rapidly changing rings, ulceration, bleeding, marked pain, pus or fever. Seek assessment sooner when lesions involve the eyes, cause significant swelling, or appear after a new medicine. A changing or atypical mark should not be assumed to be granuloma annulare without examination.
