How effective are topical corticosteroids for erythema multiforme?

Erythema multiforme often appears as round target-like marks that can develop over a short period. A topical corticosteroid can dampen local skin inflammation and make a mild, skin-limited episode more comfortable. Its benefit is less predictable when lesions are widespread, blistering or involving the lips, mouth, eyes or genitals. The clinician may need to consider an infection, medicine reaction or another explanation before choosing treatment.

Use the prescribed preparation only on the areas and for the duration advised. Keep the skin clean, avoid picking lesions, and use gentle moisturising if the surface is dry. Tell the clinician about new medicines, recent illness and previous episodes; do not stop a prescribed medicine abruptly without instructions, but seek advice promptly if a medicine reaction is suspected. Treatment of pain, hydration or a recognised trigger may be needed alongside skin treatment.

Get urgent help for eye pain, light sensitivity or vision change, painful mouth sores that limit drinking, genital sores, trouble swallowing or breathing, or widespread blistering and peeling. Prompt review is also needed when a rash is spreading quickly, fever is present, or the skin looks infected. These features can require care beyond a cream.

Ask whether your eruption is limited to the skin, which areas may receive the cream, and what symptoms would signal eye or mouth involvement. Ask whether a recent infection or medicine could be relevant and when a follow-up is needed.
