How effective are topical corticosteroids for contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction after skin touches an irritant or an allergen. The medicine suppresses inflammation in the treated skin, so itch, redness, scaling and discomfort can ease. It does not remove the trigger, repair every cause of damaged skin or prevent a fresh reaction after another exposure. The result depends on the affected site, the severity of inflammation and whether the diagnosis is correct. Thickened or repeatedly exposed skin may take longer to settle.

Apply the prescribed strength in the instructed amount and frequency, then wash your hands unless they are the treated area. Stop contact with the suspected product, chemical or material when possible; gloves may help for wet work if they do not worsen the problem. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser to support the skin barrier, leaving a short interval between products if advised. Do not use steroid medicine on the face, folds or broken skin without specific guidance, and do not extend the course on your own.

Seek prompt assessment if the rash becomes hot, increasingly painful, swollen or oozy, or if you develop fever. Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or widespread blistering. Arrange review if the rash persists after trigger avoidance and the prescribed course, spreads to new areas, or repeatedly returns; patch testing or another diagnosis may need consideration.
