How effective are topical corticosteroids for cheilitis?

Cheilitis means inflammation of the lips. It can follow irritation from saliva, licking, cosmetics or dental products, an allergic reaction, infection, dryness or another skin condition. A corticosteroid can reduce inflammatory swelling and discomfort, but it will not remove an allergen or treat every infection. Lip skin is thin and easily exposed to the mouth, so the suitable product and duration matter. Repeated self-treatment can mask the diagnosis or cause unwanted skin changes.

Use only the preparation prescribed for the lips and apply a thin layer exactly as directed. Avoid licking, picking and fragranced lip products while the skin heals; a bland protective ointment may reduce exposure to saliva and irritants. Do not share medicines or apply a stronger body steroid to the lips without advice. If a new toothpaste, cosmetic or food contact is suspected, record the timing and discuss a safe way to avoid it. Persistent symptoms deserve reassessment.

Arrange medical review for crusting, pus, grouped blisters, marked swelling, spreading redness or pain, since infection or another diagnosis may need different treatment. Seek urgent help if lip or tongue swelling affects breathing or swallowing. Contact a clinician when cracking repeatedly bleeds, sores do not heal, or symptoms return soon after treatment.
