How effective are topical corticosteroids for bed bug bites?

Bed bug bites can produce itchy red bumps or patches after exposure, and the skin reaction can continue even after the insect has gone. A topical corticosteroid dampens that local inflammation and may make the urge to scratch easier to manage. It does not kill bed bugs, sterilise the room or treat an infection caused by broken skin. A clinician should consider other causes if the pattern is unusual or the rash does not improve.

Use only the preparation and schedule advised, applying a thin layer to the itchy affected spots. Keep nails short, wash gently and use a cool compress to reduce scratching. Avoid applying steroid to open or infected skin unless a clinician specifically says to do so. Inspect sleeping areas and arrange appropriate pest-control measures; treating the environment is necessary to stop repeated exposure. Wash bedding according to local pest-control advice.

Get medical advice if bites become increasingly painful, warm, swollen, crusted or oozy, or if you develop fever. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or face, widespread hives, dizziness or breathing difficulty. Review is also sensible when new lesions continue despite environmental treatment or when the diagnosis is unclear.

Ask whether the marks fit bites, which areas can be treated, how long to use the steroid, and how to recognise infection. Ask what symptom relief is suitable for children, pregnancy or sensitive skin.
