How effective are topical corticosteroids for asteatotic eczema?

Asteatotic eczema develops when very dry skin loses flexibility and forms fine cracks, often on the lower legs, arms or trunk. Corticosteroid cream or ointment reduces the inflammation around those cracks and can ease itch, redness and soreness. It is only one part of care: dry skin can continue to split if bathing habits, low humidity, harsh cleansers or friction keep weakening the barrier. Once the active inflammation settles, regular emollient use is usually central to keeping the skin comfortable.

Apply the prescribed steroid thinly to active eczema, then use a fragrance-free moisturiser generously over dry skin as directed. Short, lukewarm showers and a gentle cleanser can reduce barrier damage. Pat rather than rub, and moisturise soon after washing. Avoid scratching and fragranced products on cracked areas. Do not place steroid under an airtight covering or use it on thin-skinned sites without medical instructions; prolonged or unsuitable use can cause skin thinning and irritation.

Seek review if cracks are painful, bleeding, spreading or failing to improve, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Prompt assessment is needed for pus, increasing warmth, marked tenderness, fever or rapidly worsening redness, which may indicate infection. Emergency care is appropriate for facial swelling or breathing difficulty after a product.
