How effective are topical corticosteroids for allergic contact dermatitis?

Allergic contact dermatitis is an immune reaction after skin touches a substance it has become sensitive to. A corticosteroid applied to the rash dampens that local inflammation, so redness, swelling, scaling and itching may settle. It does not remove the allergen from clothing, cosmetics, jewellery, work materials or surfaces. A rash that returns after treatment may reflect continued exposure, an unrecognised trigger or a different skin problem.

Use the prescribed strength and schedule on clean, dry skin, applying a thin layer only to affected areas. Wash hands afterward unless the hands are being treated. Continue gentle moisturising to repair the skin barrier, leaving a short gap if your clinician advises it. Avoid the suspected product or material, and keep a note of new exposures. Do not use a stronger product, cover the area tightly or treat the face, folds or genitals without specific advice, because these sites absorb medicine more readily.

Arrange medical review if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returning, not settling with the prescribed plan, or interfering with sleep or work. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, pain, pus, fever, rapidly developing blisters, facial swelling or trouble breathing. Those features can signal infection or a more serious allergic reaction and need assessment rather than more steroid cream.

Ask which strength suits the body site, how long to use it, what allergen should be avoided, and whether patch testing could identify the trigger. Ask how to distinguish a flare from infection and what maintenance plan to follow if episodes recur.
