How effective are topical calcineurin inhibitors for atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that commonly causes itch, dryness, redness, and a damaged skin barrier. Topical calcineurin inhibitors calm immune signalling in the skin without being topical steroids. They are often considered for the face, eyelids, skin folds, or other areas where repeated steroid use needs careful planning.

They can be used during a flare and, for some people, as intermittent prevention when advised. Improvement is judged by less itch, reduced redness, smoother skin, and fewer flares. They do not replace moisturising, trigger management, or treatment of an infection when one is present.

Apply a thin layer to the affected skin as prescribed, then moisturise as directed. Wash hands after use and avoid the eyes unless the prescribed instructions specifically cover that area. A brief warm or burning sensation can happen early; persistent or severe irritation should be reported.

Use a bland moisturiser regularly, keep showers lukewarm and short, and choose fragrance-free cleansers and fabrics when possible. Do not apply the medicine to crusted, oozing, or clearly infected skin without medical advice. Keep using the plan for the recommended period rather than stopping at the first calmer day.

Contact a clinician if the rash is worsening, disrupting sleep, spreading despite treatment, or repeatedly returning. Seek prompt care for painful grouped blisters, pus, rapidly increasing warmth, fever, or eye-area swelling. These signs may indicate infection or a complication that needs a different response.
