How effective is topical antifungal treatment for ringworm?

Ringworm, or tinea corporis, is a fungal skin infection rather than a worm. It may form an itchy, scaly, expanding patch with a more active edge. Topical antifungals act at the skin surface, but the rash can look discoloured or faint after the fungus has been controlled. That leftover change does not necessarily mean treatment has failed.

Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin and follow the product directions, including how far around the visible patch to treat. Wash hands after application, keep the area dry and avoid sharing towels, clothing or sports equipment. Wash fabrics that contact the rash and check pets or household contacts if repeated infections occur.

Get medical advice if the rash involves the scalp, beard area or nails, covers a large area, becomes painful or infected-looking, or does not improve with correct use. Children, people with reduced immunity and anyone with a spreading rash may need an earlier assessment.
