How effective is topical antifungal treatment for jock itch?

Jock itch, also called tinea cruris, is a fungal infection that commonly affects the groin, upper inner thighs and nearby skin. An antifungal cream, gel or spray works on the skin surface to reduce the fungus. Itching and redness may settle before the infection has fully cleared, so stopping as soon as you feel better can allow it to return.

Follow the product directions or your clinician's plan, applying a thin layer to washed, thoroughly dried skin and the surrounding affected area. Keep the groin dry, change sweaty clothing promptly, wear loose breathable underwear and avoid sharing towels. Do not apply a steroid cream alone unless a clinician has advised it, because steroids can mask or worsen a fungal rash.
