How effective is topical antifungal treatment for intertrigo?

Intertrigo is inflammation where skin rubs against skin, often beneath the breasts, in the groin, armpits or abdominal folds. Heat and trapped moisture weaken the skin barrier, and yeast may then add redness, soreness or small surrounding spots. An antifungal addresses yeast but cannot remove the rubbing or dampness that started the irritation. A clinician may need to distinguish it from bacterial infection, eczema or other fold rashes.

Clean the area gently, pat it dry and allow air to reach the fold when possible. Choose loose, breathable clothing and change damp garments promptly. Apply the recommended antifungal in a thin layer for the advised duration. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, perfumed products and unadvised steroid combinations. If movement or body shape makes moisture control difficult, ask a clinician for practical skin-protection options.

Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, pus, foul odour, blisters, open skin or darkening tissue. Arrange an appointment if the rash keeps returning, affects several folds, or does not improve with correct treatment. Recurrent intertrigo can warrant assessment for contributing skin or health problems.

Ask whether yeast is the likely contributor, how long to use the antifungal, and which drying or barrier measures are compatible with it. Mention diabetes, immune problems and medicines that may affect the skin, because they can change the care plan.
