How effective is topical antifungal treatment for nappy rash?

Nappy rash can result from wetness, friction, contact irritation or yeast. A yeast-related rash may be bright red and affect the creases, with smaller spots near the main area, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Antifungal treatment targets yeast; it does not repair irritation caused only by urine, stools, wipes or rubbing. A clinician or pharmacist can help select an age-suitable product.

Change nappies regularly, clean gently with water or a suitable fragrance-free cleanser, and pat dry rather than rubbing. Give the skin brief nappy-free air when practical. Apply any antifungal exactly as directed, and use a protective barrier product only as advised so it does not interfere with application. Avoid talc, fragranced products and adult creams.

Get medical advice if the rash is blistered, raw, bleeding, spreading, producing pus or causing significant pain. Seek prompt help if your child has fever, seems unusually unwell, or the rash involves the mouth or other skin areas. Arrange review if it is not improving as advised.
