How effective is topical antifungal treatment for dandruff?

Dandruff commonly causes flakes and itch without thick plaques or sores. An antifungal shampoo can reduce the scalp yeast activity that contributes to flaking and irritation. It controls the process rather than changing the scalp permanently, so maintenance use may be suggested after the first treatment period. If the scalp is very inflamed, another condition such as seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis may need consideration.

Follow the product instructions for how often to wash and how long to leave the shampoo on the scalp before rinsing. Cover the scalp rather than only the most visible flakes. Avoid scratching, which can break the skin.
