How effective is topical antibiotic therapy for folliculitis?

Folliculitis is inflammation around hair follicles. Bacteria can be involved, but shaving, sweating, tight clothing, friction, and yeast can create a similar appearance. A topical antibiotic is therefore most relevant when a clinician thinks bacteria are driving a limited surface infection.

Small red bumps may settle while deeper or repeatedly recurring lesions continue. Persistent symptoms can point to an untreated trigger or a different diagnosis, rather than showing that stronger antibiotic use is automatically needed.

Use the medicine exactly as prescribed and spread a thin layer over the instructed area. Pause shaving and avoid picking, rubbing, tight garments, and shared razors while the skin is irritated. Shower after heavy sweating, change damp clothing, and use gentle, non-irritating cleansers. Do not apply an old prescription to a new crop of bumps without advice.

Arrange an assessment if lesions are painful, deep, draining, widespread, or recurring, or if there is no clear improvement during the planned course. Prompt care is needed for fever, rapidly expanding redness, red streaks, or feeling unwell, because a deeper skin infection may need different treatment.

Ask whether the bumps look bacterial or could be caused by shaving, friction, or yeast; which areas to treat; and when to return if new lesions appear.
