How effective is targeted therapy for polycythaemia vera?

Polycythaemia vera is a blood disorder in which the marrow produces too many blood cells. A targeted medicine may act on a signalling pathway involved in that production. Benefit can mean bringing blood counts toward the agreed range, easing itching or other symptoms, reducing the need for procedures, or helping manage an enlarged spleen. Treatment does not remove the need for regular monitoring. Your haematologist weighs response against effects on blood counts, infection risk and other health conditions.

Attend scheduled blood tests because dose changes may be guided by red-cell, white-cell and platelet counts. Tell the team about headaches, dizziness, itching, night sweats, abdominal fullness, infections and bleeding. Review medicines that affect clotting, including non-prescription products, before starting or changing therapy. Stay hydrated unless a clinician has given different advice, and discuss smoking, travel and procedures with your care team. Do not adjust doses independently.

Call emergency services for sudden weakness, trouble speaking, chest pain, severe breathlessness, a painful swollen leg, loss of vision or a severe new headache.
