How effective is targeted therapy for multiple myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer involving abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow. Targeted medicines may interfere with signals that myeloma cells need, alter how cells are broken down, or help the immune system recognise them. They are often combined with other medicines rather than used in isolation. Doctors assess response through blood and urine tests, symptoms, imaging and sometimes bone-marrow testing. A response can mean less abnormal protein, improved blood counts or fewer signs of active disease.

Take each medicine according to the prescribed schedule and tell the team about numbness, weakness, infections, bruising, constipation, diarrhoea or unusual fatigue. Report every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement so the team can check for interactions. Keep appointments for blood counts, kidney tests and other monitoring. Ask how to protect yourself from infection and whether activity, dental care or travel needs adjustment while your immune system and blood counts are being followed.

Contact your treatment team quickly for fever, chills, new infection symptoms, unusual bleeding, severe weakness, reduced urine, worsening bone pain or new numbness. Seek emergency care for sudden confusion, severe headache, new leg weakness, loss of bladder control, chest pain or difficulty breathing. These signs can indicate complications that require immediate assessment.

Ask what response your team is aiming for, which tests will show whether the myeloma is controlled, why medicines are being combined, how kidney function affects dosing, and which infection or nerve symptoms require a same-day call.
